The best examples, believed by some to be 32,000 years old, are within the Chauvet and Lascaux caves in southern France. In shades of red, brown, yellow and black, the paintings on the partitions and ceilings are of bison, cattle, horses and deer. Art of the Upper Paleolithic includes figurative artwork beginning between about 40,000 to 35,000 years ago. Non-figurative cave work consisting of hand stencils and easy geometric shapes are even older.
